Yala National Park: Leopards, Elephants and Lagoons
Yala, on the south-east coast, is the country’s premier wildlife destination. Its mix of scrub jungle, lagoons and coastline supports leopards, elephants, sloth bears and a huge range of birds, all reached on a jeep safari.
Wildlife
Block 1 has the highest concentration of visitors and of leopards. Beyond the big cats you can expect elephants, spotted deer, wild buffalo, crocodiles and, in the June, July palu-fruit season, a chance of sloth bears.
Planning a safari
Morning drives from dawn and late-afternoon drives give the best sightings and light. A half-day drive is standard; a full day covers more ground.
When to go
The park is open most of the year and usually closes for around a month in the dry season (often September) for maintenance. Drier months concentrate animals near water.

Tissamaharama is the usual base, with its ancient tank and easy access to both Yala and Bundala.
