Weligama: Learn to Surf and Live the Beach Life
By Days of Iru and Opa
Weligama's long, sandy bay and forgiving waves have made it the go-to spot for first-time surfers on the south coast. Around the surf sits a relaxed town of surf schools, cafes and long-stay travellers.
The surf
The main beach break is soft and sandy-bottomed, ideal for beginners, with plenty of schools renting boards and running lessons. The season runs roughly November to April.
The lifestyle
Days revolve around dawn surfs, cafe breakfasts and afternoon naps before an evening session. It is social and easygoing, with a strong learn-and-hang-out vibe.
Around town
Nearby Mirissa and Ahangama are a short tuk-tuk away for a change of scene, whale watching or more advanced waves as you improve.
