Viharamahadevi Park: Colombo’s Green Heart
Viharamahadevi Park is the biggest park in Colombo, laid out in the colonial era and named after the queen of legend who is said to have landed at Kirinda. Opposite the white Town Hall, it is a welcome patch of green with big flowering trees, lawns and a serene Buddha statue.
In the park
Wide lawns, a musical fountain, blossoming araliya and flame trees, and a gold-painted Buddha make it a pleasant stroll. It is busiest in the cool of the early morning and evening.
Nearby
The National Museum and the Natural History Museum sit at the park’s edge, so a walk here folds neatly into a day of central Colombo sights.
Getting there
The park is in Colombo 7, opposite the Town Hall, a short tuk-tuk ride from Fort or Kollupitiya.
