Celebrating Vesak as a Local in Sri Lanka

By Days of Iru and Opa

On Vesak Poya, the streets of Sri Lanka glow with lanterns and giant illuminated pandals telling stories from the Buddha life. Seeing it as a local, moving between temples and dansala stalls, is the real experience.

What to expect

Cities and towns light up with lantern displays and huge painted pandals, and crowds move through the streets late into the night. Temples fill with white-clad devotees, and dansala stalls give out free food and drink.

Good to know

Wear modest clothing, especially near temples. It gets busy after dark, so plan your route and enjoy the atmosphere on foot.
