Vesak in the Village: Sri Lanka Festival of Light
By Days of Iru and Opa
Vesak marks the birth, enlightenment, and passing of the Buddha, and it is the biggest Buddhist festival in Sri Lanka. In the villages it turns into a festival of light, with handmade lanterns and free food stalls everywhere.
What to expect
Homes and streets fill with colourful lanterns and pandal displays, and free food stalls called dansala hand out meals to anyone passing. It is warm, communal, and deeply local.
Good to know
Vesak falls on the full moon of May, so dates shift each year. It is a peaceful, family celebration, so join in respectfully.
