Trincomalee, on the northeast coast, comes into its own from around May to September when the south is wet. Its calm, clear bays at Uppuveli and Nilaveli are made for easy swimming and slow beach days.

The beaches

Uppuveli and Nilaveli offer wide, calm stretches of sand with gentle water, good for swimming and long walks. Pigeon Island nearby is a snorkelling spot with reef and small sharks.

Out on the water

Whale-watching trips run in season, with a chance of blue whales offshore. Book with responsible operators who keep a respectful distance from the animals.

When to go

The east coast season runs roughly May to September, the opposite of the south. Outside those months the sea can be rough and many places quieten right down.
