Taprobane Island, Weligama: A Storybook Private Isle
Taprobane is a tiny rocky island crowned with palms just offshore in Weligama Bay, so small you can wade to it at low tide. Built up in the 1920s by a French count and later home to the American writer Paul Bowles, it now holds a single elegant villa and is one of the south coast’s most romantic sights.

From the Weligama shore the island looks like something from a storybook, especially at sunset. The villa can be rented in full, but most people simply admire it from the beach.
