Tangalle: The South Coast at Its Slowest
By Days of Iru and Opa
Where the south coast's busier towns buzz, Tangalle stretches out and slows down. Its wide, often near-empty beaches and scattered guesthouses suit travellers who want space, quiet and time to do very little.
The beaches
Long sandy bays run for kilometres, some calm and swimmable, others with strong surf better for walking than swimming. Check conditions locally before going in.
The pace
There is little nightlife and few crowds, which is the point. Days are for reading, swimming, seafood dinners and watching the sun go down over an empty beach.
Nearby
Turtle-nesting beaches, the Mulkirigala rock temple and quiet lagoons are all within easy reach for the days you feel like moving.
