Sri Maha Bodhi: The Sacred Fig of Anuradhapura
The Sri Maha Bodhi in Anuradhapura is a sacred fig tree grown, by tradition, from a cutting of the tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment. Planted more than two thousand years ago, it is one of the oldest trees in the world with a recorded planting date. For Buddhists it is among the most sacred places on the island.
Why it matters
Pilgrims come from across Sri Lanka to make offerings of flowers, light lamps and sit in quiet devotion. The tree is protected by golden railings and tended with great care.
Visiting respectfully
Dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered, remove shoes and hats near the shrine, and keep your voice low. White clothing is traditional for pilgrims but not required of visitors.
