Vesak: The Festival of Lanterns and Free Food
Vesak, usually in May, marks the birth, enlightenment and passing of the Buddha and is the most important Buddhist festival of the year. For a few days the island lights up with lanterns, decorations and remarkable generosity.
Lights everywhere
Homes, streets and temples are strung with colourful paper lanterns and large illuminated displays called pandals that tell stories from the Buddha's life.
Dansal
A highlight is the dansal, roadside stalls where volunteers give away free food and drink to anyone passing. Accepting a cup of tea or a plate of rice is part of the spirit.
Experiencing it
Wander a town after dark to see the lanterns and pandals at their best. It is a calm, joyful festival, so keep the mood respectful and unhurried.
