Tropical Fruits of Sri Lanka: A Market Guide
Sri Lankan markets overflow with tropical fruit, much of it unfamiliar to first-time visitors. Grazing your way through a fruit stall is cheap, refreshing and one of the simple joys of travelling here.
The ones to try
Look for rambutan and mangosteen in season, sweet small bananas, papaya, pineapple and creamy avocado. Wood apple and beli fruit turn up in drinks and preserves.
How to eat them
Vendors will often show you how to open a fruit. Rambutan and mangosteen split by hand, while wood apple is usually cracked and scooped or blended into a juice.
Buying tips
Prices are best at local markets rather than roadside stalls near sights. Buy small amounts of several kinds, and rinse anything you eat straight from the skin.
