Sri Lanka’s Surf Culture: A Coast-by-Coast Guide
By Days of Iru and Opa
With two coasts working opposite seasons, Sri Lanka has surf almost all year. Add warm water, cheap board hire and a welcoming community and it is a dream for beginners and improvers alike.
South and west
Weligama’s beach break is the classic learn-to-surf spot, with Ahangama, Midigama and Hikkaduwa nearby for when you progress. The season runs roughly November to April.
The east
When the south goes flat, the east turns on: Arugam Bay is the hub, with its famous point breaks working roughly April to October.
The scene
Surf schools, board rentals and surf-stay hostels make it easy to jump in, and the vibe is relaxed and social both in and out of the water.
