A Sri Lankan Street Food Crawl
Some of Sri Lanka’s best food never sees a restaurant. From the clatter of kottu griddles to seafront fritter stalls, a street-food crawl is the tastiest way to get under the island’s skin.
The must-eats
Kottu (chopped roti stir-fried with veg, egg or meat), egg and milk hoppers, isso wade (prawn fritters), samosas and rolls, and short-eats from any bakery counter.
Where to go
Galle Face Green in Colombo at sunset is the classic crawl, with stalls selling isso wade and grilled corn. Every town has an evening strip of carts and small "hotels".
Eat smart
Follow the crowds and the freshly-cooked stalls, go easy on tap water and ice if your stomach is sensitive, and don’t be shy about pointing at what looks good.
