Short Eats: Sri Lanka's Bakery Snack Counter
Every Sri Lankan town has a bakery with a glass counter of "short eats", savoury snacks sold by the piece. Cheap, filling and everywhere, they are the traveller's best friend on a long bus or train day.
What to pick
Try a fish roll (spiced fish wrapped in a crepe and crumbed), a curry-filled patty, a cutlet, and a spicy seeni sambol bun. Point at what looks good and stack a few on a tray.
How it works
You usually take a plate, help yourself from the counter, then pay at the till. Fresh batches come out through the day, so busier counters mean warmer snacks.
On the move
Short eats travel well, so grab a bagful before a long train ride. Pair them with a milky tea from the same shop for a classic local breakfast.
