Much of Sri Lankan life happens in the cooler evening hours, and food is at the centre of it. Across the island, evening food streets and markets fill with carts, griddles and stalls selling snacks to graze on.

What is cooking

Expect kottu griddles clattering, isso wade (prawn fritters), grilled corn, rolls and fresh juices. Prices are low, so try a little of everything as you wander.

Where to go

Colombo's Galle Face Green at sunset is the classic, with rows of stalls by the sea. Most towns have an evening strip near the market or main junction where carts gather.

Eat smart

Follow busy, freshly-cooked stalls, be a little careful with tap water and ice if your stomach is sensitive, and carry small cash for easy paying.
