Sri Lankan Cooking Classes: Take the Flavours Home
A cooking class is one of the most rewarding food experiences in Sri Lanka. You learn how everyday dishes come together, from tempering spices to grating and squeezing fresh coconut, then sit down to eat what you made.
What you learn
Most classes cover several curries, a sambol and rice, plus the roasting and grinding of spices. Many start with a market visit or a walk through a home garden.
Where to find them
Guesthouses and family-run homes across the island offer classes, with popular clusters in Galle, Ella, Kandy and along the south coast. Small groups get the most hands-on time.
Getting the most out of it
Ask the cook to write down spice ratios so you can recreate dishes at home. Note which fresh ingredients you can swap or substitute once you are back.
