Ayurveda is a traditional system of medicine and wellbeing practised in Sri Lanka for centuries. For travellers it ranges from a one-off relaxing massage to immersive retreats built around diet, herbs and daily therapies.

What to expect

A session often starts with a brief consultation, then treatments such as herbal oil massage (abhyanga), steam and warm-oil therapies. Longer programmes add a tailored diet and herbal preparations.

Casual or committed

If you just want to relax, book individual treatments at a spa. For real benefit, dedicated centres run programmes of a week or more with a fixed routine and lighter food.

Choosing well

Look for centres with trained, experienced practitioners and clear explanations. Be honest about any health conditions, and do not expect instant results from a single visit.
