Sithulpawwa: A Forest Monastery Inside Yala
Sithulpawwa is an ancient rock monastery in the dry zone near Yala, once home to thousands of monks in the early centuries of Sri Lankan Buddhism. Rock shrines, a stupa on a boulder and cave dwellings sit amid scrubland roamed by wildlife. It combines pilgrimage with a genuinely remote, wild setting.
The site
A short climb leads to a stupa perched on the rock, with wide views over the surrounding plains. Caves and shrines below preserve traces of the old monastery.
Wildlife around you
Because it lies within a protected area, you may see peacocks, deer, monkeys and occasionally larger animals near the access road. Keep a respectful distance and do not feed anything.
Getting there
The approach road passes through dry forest, so a guide or safari style transfer is common. Bring water and sun protection, and treat it as both a sacred and a wild place.
