Sinharaja: Walking the Last Rainforest
Sinharaja is Sri Lanka’s last large stretch of primary lowland rainforest, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is not about big views but biodiversity, a humid, green world of endemic species and layered birdsong.
Wildlife and birds
Sinharaja is a birdwatcher’s dream, famous for its mixed-species feeding flocks and many endemics. Look also for endemic lizards, frogs and purple-faced langurs in the canopy.
Guided walks
A local guide is required and genuinely worth it, both to find wildlife and to navigate the trails. Walks range from a couple of hours to a full day.
Leeches and rain
It rains often and land leeches are part of the experience, so wear leech socks and quick-drying clothes. The drier months are more comfortable, but the forest is green year-round.
Access
Deniyaya and Kudawa are the main entry points, reached from the hill country or the south coast.
