Sembuwatta Lake, Elkaduwa: A Cool Highland Escape
Sembuwatta Lake sits high in the hills near Elkaduwa, in the Matale district, a clear cool lake fed by mountain springs and ringed by tea estates and pine. Built as part of an estate’s irrigation, it has become a popular local spot for a swim, a paddle and a picnic in fresh highland air.
At the lake
The cold, clean water and the surrounding pine forest make a refreshing change from the lowland heat. There are viewpoints over the valley and simple facilities for day visitors.
The drive
The road up from Matale through Elkaduwa passes tea estates and the Knuckles foothills, a scenic run in itself.
Getting there
Sembuwatta is reached by road from Matale via Elkaduwa; a vehicle or tuk-tuk is needed for the hill roads.
