Sella Kataragama: The Riverside Shrine Before the Pilgrimage
Sella Kataragama lies a few kilometres from the main Kataragama sacred precinct, a cluster of shrines set by the Menik Ganga in quiet forest. Dedicated especially to Ganesh, it is traditionally the first place pilgrims stop to seek blessings before continuing to the great multi-faith shrine at Kataragama.
At the shrine
The riverside setting, with pilgrims bathing in the Menik Ganga and monkeys in the trees, is calmer than the busy main complex. It is a gentle, atmospheric introduction to one of the island’s most important pilgrimage centres.
With Kataragama
The main Kataragama sacred city, holy to Buddhists, Hindus and Muslims alike, is a short drive away and comes alive during its great annual festival.
Getting there
Kataragama is in the deep south-east, near Tissamaharama and the Yala safari parks; Sella Kataragama is a short ride from the main town.
