Seetha Amman Temple, Nuwara Eliya: A Ramayana Legend in the Hills
The Seetha Amman Temple sits on the road between Nuwara Eliya and Hakgala, wrapped around a small stream in the cool hills. It is one of the sites linked in local tradition to the Ramayana, believed to mark where Sita was held by the demon king Ravana. The colourful kovil and its riverside setting draw both pilgrims and curious travellers.
The legend
According to the Ramayana tradition, Sita was kept in this area during her captivity and is said to have prayed by the stream here. Round marks in the rock across the river are pointed out by locals as being connected to the story. Whether you read it as history or myth, the setting is atmospheric.
What to see
The temple itself is small but vividly painted, with figures of Hanuman, Rama and Sita. The stream running beside it and the surrounding greenery make it a calm stop. Dress modestly and remove shoes before entering the shrine.
Getting there
It is about a 15 to 20 minute drive from Nuwara Eliya town towards Hakgala, easy to pair with a visit to the Hakgala Botanical Garden just up the road. Most people come by tuk-tuk or as part of a hill-country day trip.
