Sasseruwa, sometimes called Ras Vehera, lies not far from Aukana and holds a large standing Buddha carved into the rock. Local tradition tells of a carving contest with Aukana, which is why this statue is often described as the unfinished twin. The site also has old cave shrines and a peaceful, out of the way feel.

The statue

The Sasseruwa Buddha stands tall against the rock, plainer and rougher than the polished Aukana figure. Whether or not the legend is true, the contrast between the two is part of the appeal.

The wider site

Climb the rock steps to find ancient cave dwellings and shrines used by forest monks. The setting is quiet and green, with views over the surrounding countryside.

Visiting tips

Sasseruwa gets far fewer visitors than Aukana, so it feels calm. Wear shoes you can slip off at the shrines, and carry water for the climb up the rock.
