Ritigala is a strict nature reserve and archaeological site rising abruptly from the dry plains between Habarana and Anuradhapura. Its slopes hold the ruins of an ancient forest monastery, with stone pathways, meditation platforms and ponds swallowed by jungle. The mountain features in the Ramayana legend, adding to its air of mystery.

Walking the ruins

A stone paved path climbs through the forest past the remains of monastic buildings and double platform structures. The walk is shaded and atmospheric, with the jungle pressing in on all sides.

Nature and setting

Because it stands higher than the surrounding plains, Ritigala has its own cooler microclimate and unusual plant life. It is a protected reserve, so stay on the paths and keep noise down.

Practical notes

You reach the site down a rough side road off the main highway, and an entry fee applies. Bring water, insect repellent and good shoes, and allow a couple of hours for the visit.
