Point Pedro: The Northern Tip of Sri Lanka
Point Pedro, on the far tip of the Jaffna peninsula, is the northernmost town in Sri Lanka. It is a breezy, palmyra-shaded place of fishing hamlets, small temples and a coastline that feels like the end of the country, because it very nearly is.
The northern point
Sakkotai Cape near town marks the northernmost land, and an old lighthouse stands over the shore. It is a fine spot to feel the trade winds and watch fishing boats work the shallow seas.
Manalkadu dunes
A short way down the coast, the Manalkadu sand dunes roll along the shore, partly burying an old colonial-era church. The pale dunes against the blue sea are one of the peninsula’s most striking sights.
Getting there
Point Pedro is about an hour by road from Jaffna town, an easy half-day trip by tuk-tuk, scooter or bus across the flat, palmyra-dotted peninsula.
