Pitawala Pathana is a small plateau of montane grassland within the Knuckles conservation area, near Riverston. A short marked trail crosses the meadow to a mini world's end drop, passing wildflowers, low shrubs and views over the valley. It is one of the gentler ways to sample Knuckles scenery without a long climb.

The trail

The loop is short and mostly flat, following a defined path across the grassland. Stick to the marked route to protect the fragile plants, and watch your footing near the exposed edge.

What lives here

The plateau supports hardy grasses, small flowers and, in season, a range of birds. Keep an eye out for lizards and insects that thrive in this cool, open habitat.

Practical notes

There is usually a small entry fee, and mornings offer the best chance of clear views before cloud rolls in. Bring water, sun protection and a windbreaker, as weather here changes fast.
