Pidurangala Rock: The Best View of Sigiriya
By Days of Iru and Opa
Pidurangala is the rocky outcrop across the fields from Sigiriya. Cheaper and wilder to climb than its famous neighbour, it offers the best possible view of Sigiriya rising out of the jungle, a favourite for sunrise.
The climb
The route starts through a working temple, passes a reclining Buddha, and ends with a scramble over large boulders near the top. It takes around 30-45 minutes and the final section needs a bit of care.
Sunrise
Most people climb in the dark to reach the summit for sunrise, when Sigiriya glows across the plain. Bring a torch and start early.
Good to know
You pass through a temple, so cover shoulders and knees. Wear shoes with grip for the boulder scramble.
