The Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya, just outside Kandy, spread over about 60 hectares within a great loop of the Mahaweli river. Once a royal pleasure garden, they are now among the finest botanical gardens in Asia, known for grand tree avenues, an orchid house and a giant Javan fig.

What to see

Highlights include the avenue of royal palms, the cannonball trees, the sprawling canopy of the great Javan fig, the orchid house and the suspension bridge over the river. It is a big garden, so give it a couple of hours.

Best time

Mornings are cooler and quieter. It is a lovely spot for a slow walk or a picnic on the lawns, popular with local families at weekends.

Getting there

Peradeniya is about six kilometres from Kandy, a short bus or tuk-tuk ride, and easy to combine with the city’s temple and lake.
