On the Way to Mount Lavinia
Mount Lavinia sits just south of Colombo, an easy ride down Galle Road or along the coastal railway. It is the closest proper beach to the capital, with a long golden strand, a row of seafood restaurants, and the landmark Mount Lavinia Hotel looking out over the bay.
What to expect
A wide, gently curving beach that fills with locals at the weekend and quiets down midweek. The old Mount Lavinia Hotel, once a British governor’s residence, anchors the headland and gives the area its colonial-era charm.
Good to know
It is about 30 to 40 minutes from central Colombo by tuk-tuk or a short hop on the coastal train, which hugs the shoreline the whole way. Sunset is the best time to arrive: grab grilled seafood at one of the beachfront spots and watch the sky go orange over the Indian Ocean.
