Nine Arch Bridge, Ella: When to Go and How to See a Train Cross
The Nine Arch Bridge, sometimes called the Bridge in the Sky, sits between Ella and Demodara stations in the hill country. Built during the British period and finished around 1921, it is made of brick, cement and stone with no steel, and its nine arches curve through thick jungle and tea. It has become one of the most photographed spots in Sri Lanka, especially when a blue train rolls across.
Getting there
It is an easy walk from Ella town, about 20 to 30 minutes downhill along the road and then a marked path through tea gardens. A tuk-tuk can drop you at the top of the trail if you would rather skip the climb back. From the Demodara side the walk is shorter but less scenic.
Timing a train
Several trains cross each day. The most reliable daytime crossings tend to be mid morning and early afternoon, but times shift, so ask a local cafe or your guesthouse for the current schedule before you set out. Aim to arrive 15 to 20 minutes early to find a spot.
Where to stand
For the classic photo, walk down to the tea slope on the valley side rather than standing on the bridge itself. Small tea stalls have grown up around the best viewpoints. Early morning light is soft and the crowds are thinner.
