Angurukaramulla Temple, Negombo: The Dragon-Gate Buddha
The Angurukaramulla temple, a short way from Negombo town, is one of the area’s most striking Buddhist sites. Visitors enter through a giant dragon’s-mouth archway into a hall holding a large reclining Buddha and vivid wall paintings, making it a favourite quick stop near the airport.
What to see
Beyond the dragon gate, the image house holds a big reclining Buddha and brightly painted murals telling Jataka stories. The compound also has an old library of palm-leaf manuscripts.
Handy for the airport
Negombo is the closest beach town to the international airport, so this temple is an easy first or last cultural stop on a Sri Lanka trip.
Getting there
It is a short tuk-tuk ride from Negombo’s beach strip and about twenty minutes from the airport.
