Namal Uyana: Ironwood Forest and Pink Quartz Mountains
Jathika Namal Uyana, near Dambulla, is best known for two things: a large forest of na (ironwood) trees and a series of pink quartz outcrops said to be among the biggest of their kind in the region. Once a monastic and sanctuary area, it is now a gentle walking destination. The rose tinted rock stands out sharply against the green.
The forest walk
A shaded trail leads through the ironwood forest toward the quartz hills, mostly flat and easy going. In the flowering season the na trees add colour and scent to the walk.
The pink quartz
At the far end, low pink quartz mountains rise from the ground, glowing warmer as the sun drops. Climb the marked sections carefully for wider views over the trees.
Visiting tips
Go earlier or later in the day to avoid the midday heat and to catch softer light on the quartz. There is a small entry fee, and water and sun protection are worth carrying.
