The annual festival at the Nallur Kandaswamy temple is the beating heart of Jaffna’s Hindu calendar, a weeks-long build-up of processions, music and ritual that draws huge crowds.
The atmosphere
Evenings fill with drumming, chariot processions and rows of oil lamps. The energy peaks on the big chariot (ther) and water-cutting days near the end.

The festival usually falls around August, running for about 25 days. Dates shift with the lunar calendar, so check locally before you plan.
Respect the space
This is a working, deeply sacred temple. Dress modestly, men often remove shirts inside as custom requires, and always ask before photographing people at prayer.
