Nagadeepa and Nainativu: A Sacred Island Off Jaffna
Nainativu is a small island off the Jaffna peninsula, reached by a short ferry ride. It holds two important sites close together: the Buddhist Nagadeepa Purana Vihara, one of the island's sacred places, and the Hindu Nagapooshani Amman temple. The blend of faiths on one small island is part of its appeal.
Getting there
You drive to a jetty on the peninsula, then take a short ferry across to Nainativu. Boats run regularly, though times can vary, so allow some flexibility.
The two temples
The Buddhist vihara and the colourful Hindu kovil sit within walking distance of each other. Both are active places of worship, so dress modestly and follow the customs at each.
Planning your visit
The trip works well as a half day from Jaffna, ideally started in the morning. Carry water and sun protection, as shade near the jetty is limited.
