The Muthiyangana Raja Maha Vihara sits in the centre of Badulla, the green capital of Uva. Counted among the Solosmasthana, the sixteen most sacred Buddhist places said to have been visited by the Buddha, it is an ancient and revered temple with a white stupa and a calm, tree-shaded compound.

At the temple

The dagoba and shrine rooms hold old murals and statues, and the grounds are a peaceful stop in a busy town. As at all sacred sites, dress modestly and remove shoes before entering.

Around Badulla

Badulla is the end of the hill-country railway and a base for the Dunhinda Falls just outside town, so the temple pairs well with a waterfall walk.

Getting there

Badulla is reached by the scenic hill railway from Kandy and Ella, or by road; the temple is central in town.
