Munneswaram: An Ancient Temple Complex Near Chilaw
Munneswaram, just inland from Chilaw on the west coast, is one of the important ancient Hindu temple complexes in Sri Lanka. Centred on a shrine to Shiva, it draws pilgrims of more than one faith and is known for its colourful annual festival. The complex has a long and storied history.
The complex
Several shrines make up the site, with the main Shiva temple at its heart. Carved towers and busy shrine halls give it a vivid, devotional atmosphere.
Festivals and faith
A major festival each year fills the temple with pilgrims and rituals. The site is revered by both Hindu and, in places, Buddhist devotees.
Visiting tips
Dress modestly, remove shoes before entering the shrines and follow the guidance of temple staff. Munneswaram is a short drive from Chilaw town.
