Mulkirigala: Cave Temples on a Sheer Rock
Mulkirigala is a large rock temple inland from Tangalle, sometimes described as a smaller cousin of Sigiriya for its dramatic setting. Cave shrines are arranged on several terraces up the rock, holding reclining Buddhas and painted ceilings. A climb of many steps links the levels to a stupa near the top.
Climbing the terraces
Stone steps rise from terrace to terrace, each with its own group of caves and shrines. The higher you climb the better the views over the surrounding coconut country.
Inside the caves
The shrines contain large reclining Buddha statues and old murals, some faded but still evocative. Ancient palm leaf manuscripts were once studied here.
Visiting tips
The climb is fairly long with many steps, so go in the cooler hours and carry water. Modest dress and shoe removal apply throughout the temple.
