Moon Plains, or Sandathenna, is a rolling grassland plateau on the edge of Nuwara Eliya, reached by jeep along a rough track. At around two thousand metres it offers huge panoramas, a "Mini World’s End" cliff viewpoint, and, on a clear morning, a horizon of tea hills and distant peaks.

The viewpoints

A short walk across the plains leads to several viewpoints, including the Mini World’s End drop, where the land falls away to the valleys below. Sambar deer and highland birds are often about in the early hours.

When to go

Go at first light before the cloud rolls in; by mid-morning the mist often closes the views. Bring a warm layer, it is cold up top.

Getting there

Access is by 4x4 jeep hired in Nuwara Eliya, as the track is rough. It pairs well with the town’s tea estates and Gregory Lake.
