Monaragala is a small, unhurried town in the Uva lowlands, named for the great rounded rock that rises beside it and is said to resemble a resting peacock. It is a crossroads for the remote south-east, close to ancient sites and wild country.

The rock and town

The dark bulk of Monaragala rock looms over the town, and the surrounding country is a mix of dry-zone forest and farmland. The town itself is a relaxed place to break a journey.

Maligawila and beyond

Not far away, the Maligawila statues, two tall ancient standing figures set in forest, are among the region’s hidden treasures, along with quiet rock temples.

Getting there

Monaragala is on the road between Wellawaya, Ella and the deep south-east, reachable by bus and a good base for exploring Uva’s quieter corners.
