The deep water off Mirissa is one of the most reliable places on earth to see blue whales, the largest animals ever to have lived, along with sperm whales and dolphins. Trips leave early from Mirissa harbour.
The season
The main whale-watching season off the south coast runs roughly from November to April, when seas are calmer and sightings most reliable.
On the trip
Boats head several kilometres offshore to the deep water where whales feed. Trips can be long and the sea choppy, so consider motion-sickness tablets.
Do it responsibly
Choose operators who keep a respectful distance and don’t chase or crowd the animals. Fewer, well-run boats make for a better and kinder experience.
