Mannar Island: Baobabs, Birds and a Historic Causeway
Mannar Island, linked to the mainland by a causeway in the north west, has a character all its own. Ancient baobab trees, brought long ago by Arab traders, dot the dry landscape, and a Portuguese and Dutch fort guards the old town. In the migratory season the surrounding wetlands teem with birds.
Sights on the island
Look for the huge baobab trees, the old fort, and the lighthouse and shrines near Talaimannar at the island's tip. The flat, open scenery is dotted with fishing villages.
Birdwatching
Mannar is one of the country's great birding areas, especially in the migratory months when flamingos and waders gather. Bring binoculars if you are keen.
Getting there
You reach Mannar by road across the causeway from the mainland. It is remote, so plan fuel, water and stops in advance, and allow time for the long drive.
