Madu Ganga: A Mangrove River Safari at Balapitiya
The Madu Ganga, near Balapitiya on the south west coast, is a wide river and wetland dotted with small islands and fringed by mangroves. Boat safaris weave through narrow mangrove channels, visit island temples and pause at cinnamon and craft stops. It is a relaxed, scenic half day out.
On the water
Boats glide across open lagoon and then duck into shady mangrove tunnels alive with birds. Guides point out kingfishers, monitor lizards and the tangle of mangrove roots.
Island stops
Trips often call at a small island temple and at places demonstrating cinnamon peeling or offering a fish foot spa. You can join in or simply watch.
Planning tips
Agree the route and price before setting off, and choose operators who avoid disturbing wildlife. Mornings are cooler and better for birds, so an early start pays off.
