Lunuganga: Geoffrey Bawa’s Garden Masterpiece
Lunuganga, near Bentota, was the country home and lifelong project of Geoffrey Bawa, Sri Lanka’s most celebrated architect and the father of "tropical modernism". Over decades he shaped the old rubber estate into a series of garden rooms, terraces and framed views that flow down to a lake, and it is now open for tours and stays.
The garden
Lunuganga is less a flower garden than a composition of space and vista: clipped lawns, sculptures, courtyards and carefully placed trees that frame the water and sky. It rewards a slow, guided wander.
Visiting
You can tour the estate by day or stay overnight in the guest rooms. Booking ahead is wise, and it pairs naturally with a visit to Bawa’s other works along the coast.
Getting there
Lunuganga is near Dedduwa, a short drive inland from Bentota on the southern coast.
