Kumana: The East Coast Bird Park

Kumana, on the south-east coast beyond Arugam Bay, is one of Sri Lanka’s most important bird sanctuaries. Its centrepiece is a mangrove-fringed lagoon where thousands of water birds nest.
Birds
The Kumana villu (mangrove lagoon) draws large numbers of nesting and migratory birds, including pelicans, storks and herons, with the nesting season broadly around May to July.
Beyond birds
The park also has elephants, leopards and crocodiles, and it sees far fewer jeeps than neighbouring Yala.
Access
It is usually reached from Arugam Bay, making a natural add-on to a surf trip on the east coast.
