Koneswaram Temple: The Cliff-Top Kovil in Trincomalee

By Days of Iru and Opa

Thirukoneswaram Kovil stands on Swami Rock, a headland that drops straight into the sea at Trincomalee. It is an important Hindu temple with a bright gopuram and a spectacular setting above the Indian Ocean.

What to expect

The temple complex is vivid with painted figures, and the cliff edge behind it gives a long view over the blue water. Inside Fort Frederick on the way up, spotted deer often wander the road.

Good to know

Dress modestly and remove shoes at the temple. Combine it with the town beaches and, in season, a whale or dolphin watching trip from Trincomalee.
