The Knuckles Range: Cloud Forests and Trekking
The Knuckles Massif, part of Sri Lanka’s Central Highlands World Heritage Site, is a wild range of peaks that resemble a clenched fist. It offers some of the best trekking in the country, through cloud forest, grassland and remote villages.
Trekking
Routes range from half-day walks to two- and three-day treks with village homestays. Trails cross streams, pygmy cloud forest and open pathana grassland with big views.
Guides and permits
A guide is recommended and required for some areas, both for safety in the changeable weather and to arrange conservation permits.
Weather
Mist and rain can arrive quickly at altitude, so pack layers and waterproofs even on clear mornings. The drier months give the most reliable trekking.
Base
Most treks are arranged from Kandy or from villages like Meemure, one of the most remote in the range.
