Kitulgala: White-Water Rafting in the Rainforest
Kitulgala sits in wet lowland rainforest on the Kelani River, west of the hill country. It is the main base for white-water rafting in Sri Lanka and a green, rainy antidote to the beaches.
Rafting
Half-day trips run a series of grade 2-3 rapids suitable for beginners with a guide, threading through jungle scenery. It is a fun, splashy introduction to white water.
More adventure
Operators also offer canyoning, waterfall abseiling, jungle treks and birdwatching in the surrounding forest.
Film history
The 1957 film The Bridge on the River Kwai was shot on the Kelani here; you can visit the site where the bridge once stood.
Weather
It is one of the wettest parts of the island, so expect rain and pack accordingly. Water levels, and rafting, are best after rains.
