Kaudulla: The Other Elephant Park
By Days of Iru and Opa
Kaudulla, built around another ancient reservoir near Habarana, is part of the same elephant-gathering story as Minneriya. Herds move between the parks with the seasons, and Kaudulla often holds the crowds of elephants when Minneriya’s water is high.
Elephants
Large herds graze around the Kaudulla tank, especially in the drier months. Drivers track which of the nearby parks the elephants have moved to on any given day.
Other wildlife
Alongside elephants you may see deer, wild buffalo, crocodiles and plenty of water birds around the reservoir.
Base
Habarana is the usual base, central to Kaudulla, Minneriya and the Cultural Triangle sites.
