Kataragama: A Multi-Faith Pilgrimage Town
Kataragama is one of Sri Lanka’s most important and unusual sacred places, holy across religions. Its riverside temple complex draws pilgrims year-round and erupts into a famous festival of fire-walking and processions once a year.
The sacred precinct
The complex centres on the shrine of the god Kataragama, alongside Buddhist, Hindu and Muslim places of worship set among trees by the Menik Ganga river, where pilgrims bathe before worship.
The Esala festival
During the Esala festival (usually July, August) the town fills with processions, and some devotees perform acts of penance including fire-walking. It is intense and deeply local.
Etiquette
Dress modestly and follow the lead of pilgrims. Evening puja times are the most atmospheric.

It pairs with a Yala or Bundala safari, and the ancient stupa at nearby Tissamaharama is worth a stop.
