Udawatta Kele: Kandy’s Royal Forest
Udawatta Kele is a forest sanctuary rising on the hill directly behind the Temple of the Sacred Tooth in Kandy. Once a royal forest reserved for the Kandyan kings, it is now a protected reserve of tall trees, winding trails and birdsong, a green escape minutes from the city centre.
Walking the reserve
Shaded footpaths loop through the forest past a small lake, giant lianas and old meditation caves and hermitages. It is a rewarding spot for birdwatching and for glimpsing monkeys and monitor lizards.
Good to know
There is a modest entrance fee. Go in the morning for the best birdlife and cooler air, and wear decent shoes for the trails.
Getting there
The entrance is a short, steep walk up from behind the Temple of the Tooth, easily added to a day exploring central Kandy.
